Farmers Insurance Review

Longtime Farmers’ Customer Gets Spouse to Stay Long Term as Well.

farmers insuranceFarmers Insurance is sold exclusively through their agents in your hometown. These agents sell nothing but Farmers Insurance, so they not only know the product inside and out, they also know the company.

In fact, unless you have a claim, you will probably never talk to anyone directly at the company for the time you are insured with them. Almost everything is handled by their agents.

About the Company

Farmers Insurance was founded by John C. Tyler and Thomas E. Leavey in a small office in Los Angeles, California. They started the company just a year before the Great Depression, in 1928. Of course, we all know that this was not the best time to be starting a company, which is why Farmers is so proud of the fact that they not only survived the Great Depression, but that they thrived.

Today, Farmers Insurance is still going strong and writes insurance in 41 states, has around 20,000 employees, and claims to have over 15 million clients. It is currently the third-largest car insurance company in the nation.

My Farmers Insurance Experience

I was introduced to Farmers Insurance when I first met my husband. He had been with Farmers for 14 years and was very comfortable with his local agent. Because it was cheaper if we were together on one insurance policy, we just added me to his policy and cancelled the policy I had through a different company.

I have now been with Farmers for 5 years and have yet to have a problem with them. All of our dealings have been through the local agent, except for the one claim we had. From the scene of the accident I called the Farmer’s Claim Line to file a claim. I ended up having minimal contact with Farmers for the claim as the other company took over and paid, as their driver was unquestionably at fault.

Farmers Positive

I enjoy how I can sit down with one of the women in my local office to make changes to my insurance policy. Because I worked in the insurance field, I usually have a lot of “what if” scenarios and want all of the different prices. They have always been very good with taking the time to get me all of the information I need and never seem bothered with all the different times they have to adjust the policy to get different quotes.

Their prices also seem to be the same or less as other places I have received quotes from. I think a lot of this has to do with our personal information as my husband and I are nowhere near being rated as a high risk to insure. So, the quotes we get may be a little more level than someone that is younger or has a bad driving record.

Farmers Negative

After being with Famers Insurance for five years now, I have yet to have a problem and have not experienced any negative aspects as a current client.

However, the only way you can get a quote through Farmers Insurance is through their website or by contacting a local agent. So, for those that do not live near an agent and are not internet savvy, getting a quote from this company will be next to impossible.

I did try to call Farmers Insurance directly for a quote and spoke to a representative. She stated that she couldn’t give me a quote, but took my location information to find me an agent. After giving me the first name and telephone number of an agent I asked her how many agents are in my area. She told me there were 7 and offered the information that if I went to the Farmers’ website that I could pull them all up for their information.

I did as she suggested as I am actually partial to getting my information online anyhow. I found that only 5 of the 7 were in the city I live in, with the remaining 2 in a smaller town 35 minutes away.
