Unitrin Insurance Review
Former Unitrin Employee and Claimant Gets Lost Trying to Find Her Way Back.
In name, Unitrin Insurance actually no longer exists. You can’t find a website for them any longer, independent agents no longer write them and there are no office locations for them.
How could a large insurance company just fall of the face of the earth? They didn’t, they just changed the name of their entire company to that of one of the companies they took over.
About the Company
Unitrin was started as a spinoff of the company Teledyne and became its own recognized company in the year 1990. From the time it was started to today it has managed to prevent larger companies from taking it over, while at the same time taking over smaller companies itself.
In 2002, Unitrin purchased part of the Kemper Insurance Company and sold its products under the Unitrin name.
Then in 2011, Unitrin purchased all rights to the Kemper name and in a move that is rarely seen in the insurance industry, they changed their company name to Kemper. Per Donald G. Southwell, the president and chief executive of Unitrin, the company decided to change its name to Kemper because Kemper is a name more familiar to the public than the name Unitrin.
My Unitrin Experience
Unitrin was the first insurance company that I worked for. I started as a file clerk and ended up managing the mailroom, so my actual insurance experience was limited to the many questions I asked of the underwriters and claims adjusters.
My first experience with Unitrin, outside of being employed by them, was as a claimant. The young driver that was driving the vehicle they insured was at fault for the accident and Unitrin never did fight me on that fact. Because my vehicle could not be driven and was towed away from the scene of the accident I was given a rental car within a couple days.
Overall, I really didn’t have any problems with payments or the company accepting responsibility. Over the nine months that I ended up having medical treatments and physical therapy, the claims adjusted even called periodically to check on me.
Unitrin Positive
Even though the name Unitrin is no longer around, the company and its way of doing business is. I was very happy with the way they processed my claim and have no real complaints in my interactions with this company.
Unitrin Negative
Technically, if you want to get insurance with Unitrin, you have find and get quotes for Kemper Insurance. This is extremely confusing, trust me I know; I felt my head spinning trying to figure out why I kept getting sent to a Kemper website when I typed in Unitrin.com.
