Based out of Columbus, Ohio; SafeAuto was started in 1993. They currently write in 16 states, but are working on getting licensed and set up to sell insurance in many more. They do not use agents to sell their insurance products; they instead sell directly to the buyer.

Their motto is “We keep you legal for less!” as they specialize in selling low-priced, auto insurance policies for drivers that are looking to only purchase the minimum insurance required in their state.

    I have been with Safe Auto for over a year now. I switched from a top company to this company due to getting a better rate. The rate was 25 dollars lower so I could not pass up the chance. After a few months I’ve come to realize how Safe Auto can afford to give me a lower rate. They are a no extras kind of company. However that does not take away from the quality of the insurance. I notice the way they cut corners is through the quality of their proof of insurance cards (just basic paper, poorly printed) and the quality of the ink they use for their bills. Their bills are all in black and white (their logo is red but even that is black and white on the bills). This is the sort of thing you really shouldn’t mind because the rate is so good. I have not had to make any claims yet but after talking to an agent when I switched I don’t feel like I would have any problems with them if I had to make a claim. The payment is due at the same time every month. I use their website to make payments. Their website is nothing fancy and it is easy to use. My only complaint about making a payment is the fee they charge to pay your bill is absolutely outrageous. It is $3.95 each month. I really hate those “convenience” fees and that’s exactly what this fee is. Since I use a debit card and do not pay by check I will always be hit with this fee. That truly is my only real complaint about the company based on the experience I’ve had so far.

    SafAuto is a relatively good company. They have low payments and good coverage. However, it is not always easy to get things changed. Also, they do not allow you to be late as other companies do They do not have a grace period so if you are late, you are uninsured.

    STAYYY AWAY!!! This is by far the worst insurance company I have ever had!! They have lots of hidden fees they dont tell you about. The customer service is very rude. I was in an accident on 03/23/2015 and the claims dept was such a mess they kept getting the 2 diff cars on my policy mixed up and it took over a week to get that settled. I could not get anyone to return my phone calls until I called and left very mean messages on multiple voice mails. My claim took forever, my car was totaled and she couldnt remember to get me a rental to save her life. I called and called and They kept sayin the lady who took my claim had to reserve the rental but she would never call back. I did not receive my insurance check until May 6th.. Needless to say the car lot that I am financing thru will no longer accept Safe Auto from any customers due to this issue. Just plain terrible.

    Stay far away from this company. They will find ways to screw you out of money and time. I wasted over $150 and got nothing in return. They will gladly take your credit card for payment but they don’t do automatic payments. Someone should remind them this is 2013. They send you a bill in the mail which they charge an additional $10 for and if it doesn’t arrive on time they cancel your policy. No late fee, no frozen policy just straight up cancelled. I called them to try and get everything straightened and they said I would have to get a new policy again and pay the ridiculous fees of $150 upfront again. I asked them if there was anyway they could work with me to keep my policy and all they said was thanks for choosing safeauto and hung up on me. Their best interest is stealing your money.

    I believe that my insurance it pretty good. I only have liability insurance, but for just that, I have a great rate of $61 a month. My down payment was only $51. Since I’m on a budget, I really need a low monthly bill. They also informed me that I am able to upgrade my policy to full coverage with out having to start my plan over.

    The only thing that I don’t like is that I have to pay for towing out of my pocket and they will reimburse me up to $40. I do t like this because I am on a budget and I mite not have the money to pay for the tow at the time of need, so for my situation my towing would be useless to me.

    Find another company, all kinds of hidden charges. Charges ten dollars extra when they send you a bill. Doesn’t care if they loose a customer over a ten dollar charge. Friendly when your buying insurance, but very rude when you try and talk with them about your bill..

    I was rear ended by a safe auto driver where my car was heavily damaged. It has been six weeks and I am still having to deal with this nightmare of a company. They have stalled repair, tried charges me betterment on parts that their customer caused and have been very rude to me.

    The only way I can talk to someone is to constantly call new claims. I still have not had any of my medical bills paid and they want me to sign a letter giving them complete medical history.

    It took them more than a week to convince them my car was not the car that hit me.

    I hope no one will ever have to deal with this horrible company.

    I really don’t have any problems with my car insurance company, Safe-Auto. This is the first and only car insurance company that I have ever had, so there is not much to compare it to.

    As far as price wise I would assume that they are reasonable compared to the commercials that I have seen on TV. What I didn’t realize is that my monthly policy payment was based on my place of residence. I found out this information when I moved from one city to another city. And in my perspective it was a better city, structurally wise, average income and race majority. The price of my policy dropped dramatically, due to me moving to a better neighborhood. It was a shocking, but well appreciated discovery.

    I loved the fact that towing was included, for up to 15 miles. I was always getting a flat tire where I originally lived; because everywhere I turned there was a pot hole. I would swerve to avoid one pot hole and boom there goes another. They were really hard to avoid, so getting a flat tire every two weeks was enviable. So, I would need to call the tow truck all the time. It would be free of charge as long as I was in the 15 mile radius. Every time I called customer service they were very polite and friendly.

    They tried their best to help me with my concern as quickly as they could. The only bad thing is that when it came time for me to receive a return phone call, they were a bit slow to perform. I was always the one would called them to get a status update. When I called my questions were answered, but it just displeases me that I had to be the one to call, when they said that they would have one of their agents call me. As far as their claim service it was good. As soon as I got into an accident I called and I only stayed on hold for a little while. The asked me the relevant questions and provided me with a claim number and told me that someone would be coming to do an estimate in a few days.

    Two days later a male called me and said that he was coming to do the estimate of the damages to my car. I informed him that I was at the doctor, which was about a mile away from my residence. He agreed to meet me there. By the time I came out the office, the man had already found my car in the parking lot and was ready with an estimate. I over all I am satisfied with safe-auto as a car insurance company
